Solar Market in Portugal – Universal Kraft starts a new project development in Portugal with 280 ha in Chamusca!

Universal Kraft has started the project development of the Solar Market in Portugal.

The solar market in Portugal is one of the key markets within EU, where Universal Kraft has it’s long engineering presence. With a good solar radiation, the Portuguese goals for renewables are getting stronger and concrete throughout the time. Portugal has set a goal of between 8.1 GW and 9.9 GW in installed capacity by 2030 and Universal Kraft aims to develop this solar market in Portugal.

Portugal has the ambition to become “EU’s principal green hydrogen producer” as well and according to its NECP, Portugal is committed to “create a real market for renewable gases”, to develop an industrial policy with the aim to “position Portugal as an important European player in the green hydrogen market” leveraging solar energy and the solar market in Portugal ”as a factor for competitiveness”. Still aligned to its NECP, Portugal expects by 2030 a final green hydrogen consumption of 65 ktoe (756 GWh) for the transport sector, representing about 7% of the renewable fuels for transport.

Universal Kraft in partnership with UH2, has developed this project for hydrogen production to be injected into the natural gas pipeline, supporting the solar market in Portugal as well as the hydrogen development in this country.

From solar power to hydrogen:

By combining the long experience of Universal Krafts power development with the Hydrogen competence of Universal H2, solar and hydrogen can model a viable non-fossil value chain.

Green hydrogen is currently considered one of the most important forms of renewable energy in the future. H2 from renewables is a clean gas that can be used for energy generation and energy storage. capable of generating electricity after storage, as well as serving as fuel for transportation, industry, domestic use, among others.

Universal Kraft intends to use the energy produced from this solar plant either to be injected into the grid as well as to produce green hydrogen to be blended into the natural gas pipelines, aligning its goals with the development of the hydrogen and solar market in Portugal.

Acting on this commitment represents a major challenge; decarbonizing an entire energy system is far from simple, where Hydrogen needs to play a central role. Universal H2 (UH2) is working on the full value chain in the green Hydrogen space. All aspects of green or clean hydrogen are in early phases, but never had such a broad value chain gotten ready to act at pace.

UH2 draws on many years of renewables market experience in taking on this landscape by selecting approaches matching our beliefs on value levers with our renewable production competence, initially by selecting geographies with imminent supply or demand with benefits and visible feasibility. UH2 will in addition to classic project development of green Hydrogen production, capitalize on the future global growth by investing /participating in promising intellectual property, either through tech companies, implementation or applied academic research, as well as develop distribution and storage in the liquefied form and as well as green Ammonia.
